Although the author has already published on aspects of the content of this book, he has taken the oppor- tunity to review previous conclusions, to give a broader context to the discussion and to provide a more comprehensive historical portrait. The result is a fresh account of the subject and a genuine contribution to the field. Each chapter covers a distinct timeframe and examines specific denominations or movements in turn, highlighting the prominent figures and events of the period. The book opens with an analysis of the Calvinistic Methodists as they developed from sect into denomination. Apart from Methodism, the Established Church appears to have been somewhat lacklustre theologically, except in its High Church and, later, Tractarian forms.
