Three ladies from England

Three ladies from England l° S. Greig Smith. No special virtue or significance attaches to 100 as compared with~ say, 99 years; to 50 as compared with 49 years, or to 25 as compared with 24 years. But human beings have developed the habit of regarding the full, half or quarter century as providing milestones at which it is appropriate to pause for a backward glance or a survey of progress. On the basis of the quarter century period, it may be of interest to look back to the beginning of medical social work in Victoria, for it is just 25 years ago since Miss Agnes Macintyre arrived from St. Thomas I Hospital, London, to become the first hospital almoner in this State. Actually, she arrived in July or August, 1929. It was at the invitation of the Royal Melbourne Hospital Almoner Auxiliary that Miss Macintyre came to Melbourne and her first task was to organise an Almoner Department at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Soon after her arrival, however~ as a result of negotiations, the Victorian Institute of Hospital Almoners secured her part-time services in the capacity of Directress of Training. The Institute had come into existence just prior to Miss Macintyre's arrival http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Australian Journal of Social Work Taylor & Francis
