Softcover 199 pp. Traditional customs and adat groups as culture and national identity in Indonesia, like traditional communities in other parts of the world, have long been marginalized in Indonesian law. The promise of the constitution recognizes the existence of Indigenous groups in Indonesia and national law also confirms that they also have rights to their traditional lands. However, there has been no significant change in the local laws and local laws applied by customary groups. Their right to register traditional adat (ulayat) property rights have been undermined by incoherence by competing departments for recognition. This condition leads to conflict and violence which ultimately results in the deprivation of Indigenous peoples and their vulnerability to exploitation. In her book entitled Traditional Communities in Indonesia: Law, Identity, and Recognition, Lilis Mulyani explains about the discourse of traditional communities and Indigenous groups in Indonesia.
