Transnational east Asian studies ASIAN ETHNICITY BOOK REVIEW Transnational East Asian Studies, Edited by Kevin N. Cawley and Julia C. Schneider. Liverpool: Liverpool University Press, 2023, 294 pp., $130.00 (cloth); $52.99 (paper). Edited by Kevin N. Cawley and Julia C. Schneider, Transnational East Asian Studies includes sixteen individual chapters divided into four sections. The book discusses transnationalism across a wide range of East Asian geographies (China, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Taiwan), histories (from the ninth century to the present day), and academic disciplines (philosophy, literature, popular culture, history, anthropology, sociology, political science, and international relations). This edited volume aims to broaden the current academic discussions on transnationalism in terms of first, providing interdisciplinary scopes, and second, rescuing history by presenting more longitudinal cases. To achieve these two goals, this volume offers a wide variety across time and space instead of a united focus. For newcomers to this field, this book introduces the interactions of various aspects among China, Japan, and Korea; scholars in this field might also benefit from the information and insight each case provides, such as the circulation of literature, philosophy, and people in certain socio-historical contexts.
