Summary S. Poitout: A melanism appearing in adults of Spodoptera exigua (Lep. Noctuidae) reared in strict inbreeding. At the 18th generation of a S. exigua rearing, carried out in strict inbreeding, some black coloured individuals had appeared. After setting this problem in the more general context of the melanism apparition in the Lepidoptera, we give an account of the working methods and describe the normal and mutant adults. Various results are presented: the use of heterosis allows to obtain a sufficient vigour in the mutants and, consequently, to pursue their rearing; the melanic character is simple and recessive; the black phenotype individuals have a tendency to present a longer total development and their nymphae are less heavy; such individuals generally present a lower biological value comparatively to the normally coloured individuals, and particularly the black males are weaker genitors. In order to explain this mutant inferiority from the selective point of view, different reasons are set forth and discussed.
