Étude du Régime Alimentaire de Trois Espèces de Carabiques et de ses Variations en Verger de Pommiers

Étude du Régime Alimentaire de Trois Espèces de Carabiques et de ses Variations en Verger de... Summary J. F. Cornic: Studies on the feeding habits of three species of Carabid beetles and their variation in an apple orchard. — After a rewiew of the previous works, we study the feeding habits of the three most important species: Platysma vulgare L., Ophonus rufipes Deg. and Harpalus affinis F. by investigations of the crop contents. — Platysma vulgare L. is defined as a carnivorous species. The more frequently eaten invertebrates are Earth-worms and Slugs during rainy days, as well as Spiders and Coleoptera larvae (probably ground beetles larvae). — Harpalus affinis F. is almost exclusively phytophagous, but in july, 20 to 40% of the specimens are carnivorous (Diptera and Lepidoptera larvae). — Ophonus rufipes Deg. has compound feeding habits, with a summer period where 80 to 90% of the specimens are carnivorous, and an Autumn one, with a composite, phytophagous and carnivorous, feeding. For H. affinis and O. rufipes, variations in feeding habits are related to ovogenesis and eggs laying. In the three species, most of the specimens examined have an empty crop at the end of their living cycle. This phasis is related to the regression of the ovaries. Finally, we discuss the usefulness or noxiousness of the three species involved in an apple orchard. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Annales de la Société entomologique de France (N S ) Taylor & Francis

Abstract

Summary J. For H. affinis and O. rufipes, variations in feeding habits are related to ovogenesis and eggs laying. In the three species, most of the specimens examined have an empty crop at the end of their living cycle. This phasis is related to the regression of the ovaries. Finally, we discuss the usefulness or noxiousness of the three species involved in an apple orchard.
