SUMMARY A. Jarraya & C. Louis: Ultrastructural study of oogenesis in Oryzaephilus surinamensis [Col. Silvanidae]. The development of acrotrophic ovarioles in the sawtoothed grain beetle is studied by Electron Microscope. From the beginning of the cytoplasmic growth phase, the oocyte develops membranous structural elements, receives a « trophic cord » from the « nutritive cells » of the germarium and forms microvillosities. These microvillosities develop considerably during the vitellogenesis, and the flow of substances from the follicular cells occurs at their level penetrating into the oocyte by micropinocytosis. On the other hand, the intercellular spaces between follicular cells are very narrow and do not seem to be a suitable way of penetration for the vitellus precursors. Electron transparent inclusions, probably lipidic in nature, appear first in the follicular cells. They are found later in the oocyte. The electron dense inclusions that appear in the cytoplasm of the oocyte originate, at least partially, from the micropinocytosis vesicles. At the end of the vitellogenesis an electron transparent space appears in the region of the microvillosities. The chorion will be formed in this area, after the accumulation of dark granules.
