Summary A new and peculiar organ, here named « organe ventral » and found only in females of the Cercopidae belonging to the Locris genus, is pointed out for the first time and described. Its enigmatical existence (in the middle of the ventral side of the abdomen and having no conexion with the genital apparatus), origin (ectodermal but with some complications), and function (may be a sexual pherormone system) are discussed. According to the species, this particular organ is represented on the sternites in two different ways. To account for this morphological difference, the authors propose two subgenera: Locris (Stål) n. comb. and Sternoplaxophora, subg. nov.
