Understanding the Links Between Performing Artists and Audiences Understanding the Links Between Performing Artists and Audiences ROLAND J. KUSHNER he edge of the stage is a place of mystery and magic, where performers T and audiences meet to exchange meaning and satisfaction. Yet the spe- cific incidents of live performance at junctures of time and place constitute only single episodes in a system of relations joining artists and audiences. At the moments when live performances occur, the strength of the connection between these protagonists who are present can mask the roles of participants who are not present. The processes that enable these intersections often remain hidden from view, even though they have considerable influence on the out- come of the performance. This can be explored by focusing on relationships and links in the music marketplace that connect musicians to audiences. From an economist’s perspective, these meetings generate sufficient total utility, or satisfaction, to fuel demand in markets where audiences purchase artists’ services and other elements of the concert experience. To facilitate these meetings, market institutions and economic processes have evolved to join artists to audiences.
