Were there Designed Landscapes in Medieval Ireland?

Were there Designed Landscapes in Medieval Ireland? AbstractRelatively little has been written about the non-pragmatic aspects of medieval Irish landscapes. The dominance of political and ethnic conflict in the traditional view of medieval Irish history has tempted archaeologists away from any interpretation of medieval landscape that stresses pleasure and intellect. This article attempts to redress that imbalance, principally by a critique of the current literature but also by the brief presentation of two designed landscapes of c. 1300. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Landscapes Taylor & Francis

Abstract

AbstractRelatively little has been written about the non-pragmatic aspects of medieval Irish landscapes. The dominance of political and ethnic conflict in the traditional view of medieval Irish history has tempted archaeologists away from any interpretation of medieval landscape that stresses pleasure and intellect. This article attempts to redress that imbalance, principally by a critique of the current literature but also by the brief presentation of two designed landscapes of c. 1300.
