He is a geographer turned landscape historian and has the dubious distinction of having taught at every level of education in South Yorkshire: at a primary school in Sheffield’s industrial East End; at the city’s first comprehensive school; at a teachers’ training college; at Sheffield City Polytechnic; and finally at Sheffield Hallam University. He is the author/editor of 30 books and over 100 articles on landscape history, local history and the environment. He has also undertaken consultancy projects for more than 40 public and private organisations. His books Sheffield’s Woodland Heritage (Green Tree Publications, 1993) and Rotherham’s Woodland Heritage (Rotherwood Press, 1995) were used as the basis of a successful £1.5 million Heritage Lottery bid, announced in 1999, to restore 35 ancient woods in South Yorkshire. His two latest books are The Making of the South Yorkshire Landscape (Wharncliffe Publishing, 2000) and a history of the pioneering work of the Council for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) in the Peak District and South Yorkshire, Protecting
