Abstract The Record translated below is a description of the garden known either as the ‘Hall Surrounded by Jade’ (Huancuitang ) or the ‘Garden of Sitting in Reclusion’ (Zuoyinyuan ), which was constructed in the first decade of the seventeenth century in Wang Village , Xiuning County, Huizhou Prefecture. The prefectural city of Huizhou was the town now known as Shexian in the south of present-day Anhui province, in southeastern China, more or less due west from Hangzhou . The Huizhou region was noted for its merchants who travelled and worked all over the Chinese empire.
