MICHAEL STRASSER L’invasion germanique in the 1870s The Société Nationale and Its Adversaries: The Musical Politics of L’Invasion germanique in the 1870s MICHAEL STRASSER On 25 February 1871, one month after the armistice ending the Franco-Prussian War was signed in nearby Versailles, a small group of French musicians met in the Paris home of Henri Duparc to begin formulating plans for a new organization—one designed to encourage the composition and performance of what they referred to as “serious” French music.1 Flush Portions of this article were presented at meetings of the International Musicological Society (London, August 1997) and the American Musicological Society (Phoenix, November 1997). Research for my dissertation, from which the material for this article was drawn, was supported in part by a Chateaubriand Fellowship awarded by the French government. According to an anonymous account of the Société’s earliest days that is included in the organization’s archives, those present at this rst meeting included Romain Bussine, Camille Saint-Saëns, César Franck, Ernest Guiraud, Jules Massenet, Jules Garcin, Gabriel Fauré, Théodore Dubois, Henri Duparc, and Paul Taffanel.
