This issue is the work of guest editor Matthew Cohen, who has pulled together papers on Southeast Asian performing arts, most of which were delivered in a Bangkok University conference and perform- ing arts program in spring 2013. I thank Cohen for taking on the task of shepherding this exciting research to publication and appreciate the work of Wankwan Polachan and her colleagues at Bangkok University in putting the event together. This issue also includes Cody Poulton’s essay on Frank Hoff (1932–2013), someone who should already have been included in our Founders of the Field series. Hoff’s research on Japanese performance expanded our understanding, and his writings for this journal were significant. Kathy Foley University of California, Santa Cruz
