This issue is primarily devoted to the editorial work of Arya Madhavan, whose introduction to the special issue follows. After the materials edited by Madhavan, I append selected "regular" articles, but, in keeping with the female-centric focus, have included pieces by women advancing research (Karen Kartomi Thomas and K. Frances Lieder), or about a significant women-led work (Zukifli Mohammed's article on Malaysia's Suasana Dance Company). The issue casts more light on the too often ignored contributions of women to our field. I hope the questions Madhavan raises in her introduction and the cross-talk that the articles provide can advance thinking about how gender factors into the Asian performance field.
