Time's Journey Through a Room dir. by Okada Toshiki/chelfitsch (review) reviews TIME’S JOURNEY THROUGH A ROOM. Written and directed by Okada Toshiki/chelfitsch. ROHM Theatre, Kyoto, 17 March 2016 (world premiere). Time’s Journey through a Room, by Okada Toshiki, premiered at the Kyoto Fest in March 2016 and then toured Europe. Commemorating the fifth anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear catastrophe of March 2011, Time’s Journey describes the social, ethical, and emotional challenges that the Japanese have faced in the aftermath of this disaster and the country’s general economic and cultural decline since the 1980s boom. The production probes into issues of failure, cynicism, and national grief. This work was a coproduction of Kyoto Experiment/ROHM Theatre Kyoto, where I viewed it during its opening, prior to its presentation in various European cities. Being a non-Japanese speaker, I was able to follow the story comfortably through English surtitles. The plot of the play captures the life of one young man, Kazuki (performed by Yo Yoshida) and two young women—Honoka, Kazuki’s dead wife (performed by Izumi Aoyagi), and Arisa, his new girlfriend (performed by Mari Ando).
