Al Stewart has played a crucial role not only in this journal, but also in the positive development of Appalachian Literature as a sub-genre. While a handful of others, including Wilma Dykeman, Jim Wayne Miller, Gurney Norman and Grace Toney Edwards have often deservedly been in the limelight as encouragers of regional writing, Al Stewart could be found diligently working behind the scenes to create the vital institutional support system crucial to the efforts of many. In the early 1960s, when Stewart was teaching at Morehead State, he produced a series of amazing anthologies of Kentucky literature that showcased the work of established writers and demonstrated his astonishing ability to discern promising new writers. Then in 1973 when he was teaching at Alice Lloyd College, he finally succeeded in creating Appalachian Heritage.
