Multivalent Landscape: The Salvation Army Kroc Community Center Case Study Abstract: This case study research uses quantitative methods to assess the contributions of landscape components to the delivery of multiple ecosystem services at the Salvation Army Kroc Community Center (SAKCC), a 12.4-acre former brownfield site located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The term valence is used to describe the quantitative measure of a design component’s capacity to contribute to the production of ecosystem services, such as water regulation, air quality maintenance, and pollination. The selection and use of multivalent materials in design may have direct and measurable benefits on the production of ecosystem services in multifunctional landscapes.
