A new enclosure for Japanese macaques at Tierpark Berlin

A new enclosure for Japanese macaques at Tierpark Berlin hinged at the base, and the hinge-angle was fixed in such a way that all the cables could be attached to the top of the poles and to the ground, and all raised together. The cables were specially made and their breaking strain was carefully calculated. The birds were installed in the aviary in June 1977 and we can now safely say that it has given complete satisfaction. Besides the herons, we have introduced several small raptors, game birds and some passerines characteristic of the region. A total of 22 species, 80 individuals, co-exist peacefully, the only casualty having been a pheasant which died after hitting the wire netting. During the first year of the aviary’s existence, herons, Little egrets Egretta garzetta, Cattle egrets Ardeola ibis and Blackcrowned night herons Nycticorax nycticorax all constructed nests and laid eggs. A pair of wild White storks Ciconta ciconia have nested successfully on the top of one of the supporting pillars.
