Community appreciation and understanding of wetlands is key to their conservation ( Shunula 2002 ; Bouton & Fredrick 2003 ). In 2004 and 2005 Birds Australia conducted a wetland conservation project, using migratory shorebirds as a flagship faunal group, at Cheetham Wetlands, south‐west of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. These wetlands hold internationally significant populations of shorebirds, and part of the complex is listed under the Ramsar Convention on Internationally Important Wetlands ( Parks Victoria 2005 ). Access to Cheetham Wetlands is restricted, and a key issue for the maintenance of conservation values, which became evident during the project, was the need to curb the relatively high levels of unauthorized access to the site. Unauthorized access to the wetlands is of concern as it causes disturbance to shorebirds including those that breed in the area.
