BREEDING AND CARE OF RARE ASIAN EQUIDS AT PRAGUE ZOO Director, Zoologicka Zahrada Praha, Czechoslovakia andliri Volf' Curator of Mammals, Zoologicka Zahrada Praha, Czechoslovakia is no doubt that from the standpoint of conservation of nature, the equids are one of the most important groups of animals which are threatened with extinction. Their number in the wild today is very low and in the case of THERE some species, the only way to save them from extinction is to maintain and breed them in zoological gardens. We therefore believe that it will be useful internationally for us to describe our experiences with the breeding herds of equids at the Prague Zoo and at the same time to emphasize the importance of the conservation aspect of our work. In this paper we will confine ourselves to the Asian equids because much less attention has been paid to them than to the Akican species. From its foundation the Prague Zoo has kept the following kinds of Asian equids : the kulan, Equus hemionus hemionus, the onager, Equus hemionus onager, the kiang, Equus hemionus kiang and the Przewalski horse, Equus prxewalski.
