Five human rights campaigners arrested in Burundi have been charged with rebellion and undermining state security, a rights group said.Burundian intelligence agents detained the five, four of whom were about to fly to Uganda from the economic capital Bujumbura, on February 14th.They were charged late on February 16th, the Ligue Iteka rights group told AFP.Ligue Iteka continues to document numerous rights abuses in Burundi, including murders, arbitrary arrests, torture and sexual violations. The five campaigners are Sonia Ndikumasabo, president of the Association of Women Lawyers of Burundi, who was one of those arrested at the airport, along with the organisation's coordinator Marie Emerusabe. Sylvana Inamahoro, executive director of the Association for Peace and the Promotion of Human Rights (APDH) and its legal representative Audace Havyarimana were also arrested, while APDH member Prosper Runyange, was arrested the same day in the northern town of Ngozi.A senior administrative official told AFP the five were suspected of continuing to benefit from financing by an international NGO, which had left Burundi in 2018 after refusing to “follow government instructions”.Despite ongoing concerns about the rights situation, both the European Union and the United States in 2022 resumed aid flows to the deeply impoverished landlocked nation, citing political progress under President Evariste Ndayishimiye.Burundi had been under US and EU sanctions over a bloody crisis that erupted in 2015 when former president Pierre Nkurunziza made a controversial bid for a third term in office. The turmoil claimed the lives of 1,200 Burundians and sent 400,000 fleeing the country.
