D O U C E T T E 2 & THEODORE FRANK BEIMLER3 LGeneral Curator, ?Head Keeper, 3Keeper, Gladys Porter Zoo, 500 Ringgold Street, Brownsville, Texas 78520, USA Probably the most familiar of the Madagascarine herpetofauna is the extraordinarily beautiful Radiated tortoise Geochelone radiata which, being the largest of the 'starred' tortoises, has long been sought after as a zoological exhibit. It is now on the US endangered species list and according to Juvik (1975) and Baudy (1970) contemporary exploitation is largely due to subsistence hunting or collecting for sale as food. In 1972, at the first World Conference on Breeding Endangered Species in Captivity, Honegger (1975) stated that breeding was known only at Cairo, Sydney and Zurich Zoos and by two amateur breeders in Switzerland. Since 1973 the species has been bred regularly at the Gladys Porter Zoo and Memphis Zoo has also had some success.
