B E S T Director, Stanley Park Zoo, Vancouver, Canada I t is difficult and expensive to transport penguins from the Subantarctic across the equator to the northern hemisphere. It has become considerably more expensive since the Falkland Island Government introduced a tax on each penguin taken from the Falklands and South Georgia. It is therefore doubly important to prevent birds from dying in transit. There are three important factors involved : method of transport, temperature control, and feeding. Inevitably they all overlap, but I will try to deal with them separately. The ideal method of transporting penguins is obviously by direct air flight from south to north, but this is rarely possible. When it can be arranged for them to go by air, they should never travel without an escort since the chance of delays, and the birds being left for an hour in the blazing sun on some South American airport, is not worth the risk.
