This book comes in two sections. Parts 1 to 3 comprise the first 60 pages and describe the ecology and biology of plants around Perth (Western Australia), ecological restoration of coastal dune vegetation and biogeography of coastal plants. Part 4 is a Species Guide. It contains well‐designed, two‐page descriptions of 103 species of plants commonly found in the Perth region. Sensibly, it does not attempt to cover the many hundreds of plant species found within this biodiverse part of Australia, instead focusing on 87 native and 16 ‘introduced’ common species that gardeners and land managers interested in revegetation will most frequently come across. Parts 1 to 3 are something of a disappointment. While they provide interesting background to many aspects of the topics covered, they appear to have been thrown together quickly without adequate editorial or scientific review. While most of the mistakes or oversights are relatively minor, their frequency detracts from what should have been a more professional and accurate publication. As well, some of the topics covered in this section of the book are of limited interest to nontechnical people involved in coastal revegetation.
