Deadly conflict and the challenge of coexistence

Deadly conflict and the challenge of coexistence Salomon , G. & Nevo , B. ( Eds. ). Peace education: The concept, principles, and practices around the world . Mahwah , NJ : Lawrence Erlbaum , 2002 . ISBN: 0‐8058‐4193‐8 ( 298 pp ., $69.95 ). Peace Education: The Concept, Principles, and Practices Around the World is an edited book resulting from a May 2000 meeting at the University of Haifa, in Israel. Meeting participants included 30 distinguished peace education researchers and practitioners from Israel, the Palestinian Authority, the United States, South Africa, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Northern Ireland, and Rwanda. The book's 24 chapters present conflict histories, literature reviews, practice models, and evaluation typologies. Like related work in conflict resolution (e.g., Deutsch & Coleman, 2000 ) and peace psychology (e.g., Christie, Wagner, & Winter, 2001 ), the book applies psychological theory and research to fostering constructive social relations. Our comments focus on the book as a whole, looking first at structure and then at substance. Doing so raises questions about coexistence‐enhancing initiatives in ongoing conflict. Structurally, the book is divided into four sections: concepts, principles, practices, and evaluation. Chapter titles, however, categorize more neatly than chapter contents; concepts, principles, practices, and evaluation intermingle throughout the book. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Analyses of Social Issues & Public Policy Wiley
