Educational activities of the European Academy of Andrology

Educational activities of the European Academy of Andrology Andrology is a relatively new field encompassing several scientific and clinical backgrounds dealing with male and couple's sexual and reproductive health. In this definition, there are three reasons why education in Andrology is relatively unusual in Universities in Europe and outside the Continent.First: the novelty. Although medicine is based on novel achievements and changes in paradigms, a new discipline may need time to be officially and universally accepted in the academic environment. In the majority of the European universities, Andrology is still a neglected field.Second: multiple cultures. Andrology is a typical bridge unifying scientific cultures not usually connected such as: (i) the clinical and medical expertise represented by the endocrinologist and the expert in sexual medicine (and in particular contexts like Germany, the dermatologists); (ii) the surgical expertise, represented by the urologist; (iii) the basic science expertise, represented by the biologist; and (iv) the psychorelational expertise, represented by the psychosexologists. Hence, the perfect andrologist is like a table that rests sturdy and solidly on four legs: the medical, surgical, biological, and psychological. This unique and exquisite multidisciplinarity accounts for the difficulty the majority of the educational agencies to attribute Andrology to one of the four mentioned ‘legs’.
