Before this could be done, the small enclosures, such as those of the old giraffe house and zebra house, had to be reduced in number, considerably enlarged and altered. Where before thcrc had been thrty-three enclosures for ungulates, today there are only seven. NOT ADVANTAGES W e have found that there are a number of advantages in keeping animals of different species together. I. Usually much more space and opportunity for exercise can be given to the individual animal, provided that one species does not dominate another too much. 2. Many more opportunities for intra- and inter-specific contact are available to the individual animal. Its life becomes more âentertainingâ and fuller. O n the other hand, it is necessary for it to be much more alcrt because of the intraand inter-specific ranking order. It has a more lively appearance for the zoo visitor. 3 . In a large enclosure, the animals are able to retreat further away from the public if they wish. 4.Those species which usually
