Alexis Papathanassis Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences Dimitrios Buhalis University of Surrey The 6th E-Tourism Futures Forum took place in Guildford (Surrey, UK) on 26â27 of March 2007 and was organised by Dr Dimitrios Buhalis. The conference was aimed at examining current information and communication technologies (ICT) developments and applications in the tourism sector, while identifying pervasive trends and evaluating future scenarios. It is an annual, relatively small-scale event, bringing together leading e-tourism professionals and academics. Given the multidisciplinary and applied nature of the topic, particular focus is placed on detailed discussion and intense debate, allowing a maximum of 40 speakers and/or participants. During the two days, a number of innovative business initiatives and research projects were presented, raising an array of intriguing questions and highlighting a number of challenging issues. E-tourism has evolved from a technology trend to a mainstream tourism business reality, creating opportunities as well as challenges for both practitioners and researchers in the area. The observed general trend of growing ICT adoption in the tourism sector is primarily led by rising customer expectations and fuelled by competitive pressures to gain and maintain proï¬tability.
