Artist Statement: This piece of art, “Growth Mindset” (Figure 1), is a visual representation of choosing to take a positive, adaptive, dynamic mindset in medical school. It depicts the Staff of Hermes, also known as the Caduceus, which is a symbol commonly used for medicine. In “Growth Mindset” the Caduceus has roots and lush leaves and is literally growing from soil. This imagery is a metaphor for how our learning is an ongoing process. It requires nourishment and support. This piece is a reminder to adopt a growth mindset and give oneself grace as well as the space to make mistakes and learn from them. It is a call to embrace the idea that we are all learners in an ongoing process of growth. By internalizing a dynamic, adaptive self‐conception, we can view challenges and failures as temporary obstacles and opportunities to improve, rather than permanent roadblocks.1FIGURE“Growth Mindset.” Digital art of a Caduceus, the staff of Hermes and a common symbol for medicine, growing in soil.
