Journeys of Expression III: Tourism and Festivals as Transnational Practice

Journeys of Expression III: Tourism and Festivals as Transnational Practice Valerio Simoni Institute of Ethnology, University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland) The International Research Conference Journeys of Expression III: Tourism and Festivals as Transnational Practice was held at Innsbruck (Austria) from 4 to 7 May 2004. It was organised by the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change (Sheffield Hallam University) together with the Institute for European Ethnology and Folklore (Innsbruck University), and it gathered about 40 researchers coming from several countries all over the world. The participants were from diverse disciplinary fields, such as anthropology, sociology, history, geography, media studies, management, etc., and many of them were young PhD students. Presentations were held simultaneously in two different ‘Streams’, and consequently this review is just a fragmentary and partial personal impression drawn from the several thoughts and ideas presented and discussed in Innsbruck. One of the striking features of the conference was that the presentations concerned various sorts of festivals held in different parts of the world and brought together people from very different locations, thus reflecting the widespread character of tourism and festivals and revealing them as transnational practices. Tourism and festivals seem to flourish all over the world, frequently leading participants and observers to the mobilisation of similar concepts http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png International Journal of Tourism Research Wiley
