The structures needed to form the exhibits are so massive and heavy that changes and renovations are difficult and costly; typically, therefore, a public aquarium will be built (ahead of its time it is hoped) and then allowed to age with greater or less grace until perhaps one day it is totally rebuilt. At the Danmarks Akvarium attempts have been made to keep displays up to date through gradual change. The exhibits described here are offered mainly as a catalogue of ideas. The Danmarks Akvarium was opened in 1939 with the aim of displaying the diversity of life in water.
