Keeping and breeding penguins at Amsterdam Zoo

Keeping and breeding penguins at Amsterdam Zoo short and the weather is hot, a penguin becomes dehydrated very quickly and soon vomits any food it is given. In my opinion, water is considerably more important to penguins than food. In hot weather a penguin should be given at least I pint of water daily with 0.5 g of salt added during any journey in a hot climate. Feeding salt is, I believe, important in maintaining the penguin’s resistance to Aspergillus infection during the critical period of adjustment to domestic conditions. Salt without added water can be lethaleas the water is required to dispose of salt surplus in the bird’s system. Lack of salt, during hot weather, can be fatal to some penguins after very few days in captivity. This is particularly true with Gentoo penguins Pygoscelis pupuu and Ringed penguins P . antarctica. As a last piece of advice to any zoo planning to send someone to collect penguins from the Antarctic : be sure to send a man who is dedicated to the job, for he will need to be !
