FRUEH2 'Senior Zoologist and 2Associate Curator, Mammals, St Louis Zoological Park, St Louis, Missouri 63110, USA It is probable that the animals belonging to or originating from the present herd of Speke's gazelle Gazella spekei at S t -Louis Zoo are the only representatives of this now rare species (IUCN, 1974) in captivity. The captive population stems from an importation (1.2) in September 1969, which was subsequently augmented with a Q imported by Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago, in October 1970 and sold to St Louis in December 1972. By natural increase the herd has expanded to 4.11 individuals, exclusive of an offshoot colony at the Gladys Porter Zoo, Brownsville, which has grown from a St Louis bred nucleus of 1.2 to its present strength of 2.4, and a single d (survivor of a pair) at http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png International Zoo Yearbook Wiley
