The sincerity and sense of loss felt by the Indigenous people quoted in this book is real. They remember their younger days when living in the ‘country’ of their birth or childhood was simpler and happier. Sadly, as an ecologist who has considerable sympathy for the loss of the traditional Indigenous lifestyle and the problems that modern life has brought to the descendants of Australia’s original inhabitants, I found that this book failed to meet the expectations contained within its title. Not only does it not address many aspects of what is happening in and around the Murray River today, but it provides only a handful of examples of the ecological/environmental interactions that Indigenous people had with the river system. Dr Jessica Weir is a human geographer whose research has focused on ‘ecological and social issues in Australia’.
