NEW CAGE SETTINGS AT NEW YORK (BRONX) ZOO HALF of one wing of the Small Mammd House in the New York (Bronx) Zoo, USA, has been converted to a reversed photo-period operation. Cages are bathed in high-intensity white fluorescentlight during the 'night-time' (11 p.m. - 11 a.m.) and in red light by day. The relative insensitivity of the eyes of nocturnal mammals to red light allows for very high red light levels, and the animals are clearly visible during their period of activity. Plans are being made for a new building to exhibit nocturnal species of many kinds. N E W CAGE SETTINGS AT N E W YORK ( B R O N X ) ZOO N E W cage settings, simulating natural habitats, are being constructed from glass fibre and polyester resin at the New York (Bronx) Zoo, U S A. Realistic rocks, soil and vegetation have been successfully constructed and are augmented by commercially made foliage of polyethylene plastic. Dramatic lighting effects heighten the natural appearance of the enclosures used for small mammals and birds. To date, the polyethylene foliage has proved much more durable than natural foliage in enclosures containing small birds and a few small mammals.
