NIGERIA: Fishermen Targeted The jihadists claim they are attacking spies and militiamen.Islamic State group (IS) has warned that “death is the inevitable fate” of any Nigerians who collaborate with the military. The warning came in the context of a claim IS issued on March 16th in which it took responsibility for killing 35 “spies and militiamen” in north‐east Nigeria on March 8th. Local media reports assert that the victims were fishermen.The claim and warning featured in issue 382 of IS's weekly newspaper al‐Naba, published on Telegram, as part of a wider round‐up activities of IS's West Africa Province branch (ISWAP).There have been similar mass killings in the past of individuals accused by ISWAP of being “spies” and “collaborators”.Al‐Naba reported that on March 8th, ISWAP “attacked a group of spies and militias loyal to the apostate Nigerian army” near the town of Dikwa in Borno state (northeast). The statement said that “around” 35 people were killed with machine guns.Al‐Naba described ISWAP's actions as a “pre‐emptive security operation”.
