NOTES ON T H E BIRTH OF A R E T I C U L A T E D G I R A F F E , Giraffa camelopardalis antiquorum by H. G. N. Robinson, W. D. Gribble, W. G. Page and G. W.Jones Head Keeper, Keepers and Helper, Zoological Society of London, Regentâs Park, London, Great Britain O N 3rd December 1963, one of the Societyâs Reticulated giraffes, âGrumpyâ, estimated to be 17 years old, gave birth to her fifth calf, a female. All stages of birth were witnessed and throughout the process the giraffe remained calm and unconcerned by the presence of the keepers and the photographer, Mr W. G. Vanderson. The gestation period was 488 days. Time 1330 hours Giraffe starts delivery. One front leg appears, enclosed in the foetal membrane. 1350 Foetal membrane surrounding first leg breaks and drops to floor. IS IS I 520 I530 1 5 3 8 to I539 I540 Female bends down, nibbles it, turns round and then licks the foetusâs leg. The membrane was not found in the den after the birth; presumably it had been eaten by the female. Second leg appears. Female examines legs of foetus. Female
