Observations on a prolonged food refusal period of an adult fer‐de‐lance Bothrops atrox asper Bothrops atrox asper R -4Y P A Ur E Y L General Ciirator, Chicago Zoological Park, Brookfield, Illinois, USA On 23 November 1965 we carefully collected an adult two metre specimen of fer-de-lance Bothrops arrox asper in a cloud forest near Ocozocoautla in the central highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. During the collecting procedure the snake was not restrained forceably, but was guided into the open end of a snake bag. It was placed on exhibition at Brookfield Zoo on 26 December 1965, 33 days after its capture. In this time it had been kept in a large bag in relatively cool areas. The snake had been basking in a cold mist at 6 ) about 1 8 . 3 "(~ 5 " ~with only hazy sunshine at the time of its capture and so an exhibit tank was selected which was located against the cool outside wall of the buildings. This tank is about 1.3x 1.3x 1.6 m in size and its interior is poured and sculptured concrete. A pool about 1.3x 0.7 x 0.7 m occupies the front of the enclosure.
