of the Khpspringer antelope in captivity at Naples Zoo is believed to be the first recorded captive birth in Europe. In Africa there have been two births at the Pretoria Zoo, one on 19th Apnl 1929, and one on 18th January 1930 (Brand, 1963). It is not recorded whether the two births were fiom the same pair of klipspringers. The Naples Zoo received its first pair of Khpspringer antelope in 1953 from Ethiopia. They remained at Naples und 1955 when they were sent to Rome Zoo. Neither in Naples nor in Rome did the pair breed. A second pair of khpspringers, also imported from Ethiopia, arrived at Naples Zoo in 1956 and remained there until 1959 when the male died of lung congestion, whde the female subsequently died as the result of an accident. This pair also failed to breed. Observations made on these two pairs of klipspringers brought to light a particular type of behaviour exhibited by the males when in rut towards the females.
