5th: Unidentified assailants shoot and kill a prominent elder in Barawe (south). The late elder served in the past as the secretary of the district administration between 1985‐1991, and was a local peace activist since the collapse of the former central government.6th: Galkayo Town Police chief, Ali Ibrahim Ali, also known as Ali Magafe, is killed in an explosion near the Puntland presidential palace. The security situation in Galkayo has deteriorated due to increased targeted killings and other insecurity incidents.8th: South West State forces attack an al‐Shabaab military base outside Burhakaba in Bay region (southwest) killing jihadists.11th: A Somali television journalist is killed by a car bomb in front of his children, the fifth murder of a journalist in the country in 2017. Mohamed Ibrahim Gabow, a journalist working for Kalsan TV, had just left his home in Mogadishu when a bomb planted beneath the driver's seat exploded. He died in hospital. A colleague says the motive is unknown but al‐Shabaab has been blamed for a string of attacks against journalists.12th: A US airstrike hits and destroys a Shabaab car bomb‐in‐waiting in the village of Mubarak about 65km southwest of Mogadishu. A statement says the vehicle was an “imminent threat to the people of Mogadishu,” adding that no civilians were killed. Pro‐al‐Shabab websites say the vehicle was a minibus transporting fruits and vegetables from a nearby farm.14th: A suicide bomber kills 18 police officers and wounds 15 others inside the country's main police academy in Mogadishu. Al Shabaab claims responsibility and puts the toll at 27 dead.15th: Al‐Shabaab fighters clash with militiamen loyal to the group's former deputy leader and spokesman, Mukhtar Robow outside the town of Hudur (Bakool region). Robow's son is among those killed in the clashes. Robow denounced al‐Shabaab in August, days after defecting to the government.US forces carry out another air strike against al‐Shabaab militants, killing eight, about 30km outside Kismayo. A statement from the US military's Africa Command says no civilians were killed.18th: A prominent traditional elder, Mohamed Adan alias Amir Muse is shot dead by al‐Shabaab in Barawe, Lower Shabelle.20th: Islamic State (IS) claims an attack on a Somali army checkpoint in Afgoye, a key town 30km northwest of Mogadishu the previous day. It is the fourth attack on intelligence and military personnel in Afgoye to be claimed by IS in a month.22nd: Reports coming from Buq‐aqable area, Hiiraan region, say fighting erupted between local livestock herders and al‐Shabaab when the herders declined a Shabaab demand for a contribution of livestock and youths to fight for the group. Two herders are killed in heavy, prolonged fighting.Various sources say 25 Shabaab fighters have surrendered with their weapons and vehicles in Baidoa. A delegation of leaders held talks with the fighters near the town before their surrender.23rd: Pro‐al Shabaab media outlet reports a Shabaab claim of a mortar attack on the presidential palace which it says caused several casualties. The previous day it claims several hand grenade attacks in Mogadishu which cause several casualties including the deaths of three police officers.27th: Information Minister Abdirahman Omar Osman also known as Yarisow says government special forces have killed al‐Shabaab's finance manager Malin Jelle in an operation in Wanlaweyn district, Lower Shabelle.US airstrikes killed four al‐Shabaab members and destroyed a vehicle carrying explosives near Mogadishu.28th: Al‐Shabaab says it killed three Djibouti peacekeepers and wounded several others in a bomb attack on the Bulo‐berde town airstrip, Hiiraan region. The soldiers were offloading food rations from a cargo airplane.29th: The situation is calm and government forces are in control following an attack by al‐Shabaab on a Somali military base in Diinsoor district, Bay region. Residents report seeing the bodies of two attackers and say there are also casualties among the security forces.31st: A roadside bomb apparently targeting a convoy of AU peacekeepers in armoured vehicles kills a male passerby and injures three other civilians on Mogadishu's Industrial Road, near the ex‐Jalle Siyaad base, close to the Ministry of Defence. Jalle Siyaad houses Burundian peacekeepers serving under AMISOM.Al‐Shabaab claims responsibility for the attack, the latest in a series of ambushes on AU and SNA convoys in the south.
