SOUTH AFRICA: Deputy President Resigns Mabuza steps aside for heir apparent Mashatile.Deputy President David Mabuza resigned on February 4th to pave the way for his replacement by the newly‐elected deputy leader of the governing African National Congress (ANC) party, Paul Mashatile, public broadcaster SABC reported.Mabuza announced his resignation at his brother's burial service in his eastern home province of Mpumalanga, the station said.“The president will announce that Mabuza has left. I promised you that I will respect the president until I leave. I hope that those who are coming in will also respect the president,” he said.“I am making space for the one elected at the conference because I can see he [Mashatile] is also making a few moves. So now I am also in a rush to give them space.”Mabuza was defeated by Mashatile as ANC's deputy leader in party elections in December (Vol. 59, p. 23839B).A controversial figure nicknamed “The Cat”, Mabuza was seen as close to former president Jacob Zuma, a political rival of President Cyril Ramaphosa.Opponents routinely accused him of having his own private “military” which is allegedly linked to political intimidation and even political killings, many years ago when he was premier of the eastern province of Mpumalanga.
