THE AMAZON DOLPHIN, Inia geoffrensis , AT THE FORT WORTH ZOOLOGICAL PARK Director, Fort Worth Zoological Park, USA F O R several years the Fort Worth Zoological Park had anticipated the possi- bility of one day exlubiting the freshwater dolphin of the Amazon River, Inia geofrensis. Here was an animal brought into captivity only once before and never exhibited in a zoo or aquarium.* It seemed to offer tremendous potential in so many ways; firstly as a popular attraction; secondly as an important ad* In March of 1956 an expedition to Letida, Colombia, led by Ross Allen of Silver Springs, Florida. returned with two male Iniu which were kept i outdoor pools of the springs. Both animals died n about a year later. dition to the Zoological Park's systematic representation of mammals, permitting the order Cetacea to be shown; and thirdly as a subject animal for a research programme about which practically nothmg is known and yet whose marine relatives are currently being studied. In short, an exhlbit built around this remarkable mammal could fulfil several requirements of a zoo display, namely entertainment, education, and research. In May of 1962 a female lnia was imported from Leticia, Colombia to Florida and then flown to Fort Worth.
