OLLASON Education Oficer, The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, Murrayjeld, Edinbuqh, EHI2 6 TS, Great Britain Over the past eight years Edinburgh Zoo has introduced a system of interpretative labelling of the animal collection which has attracted favourable comment from visiting zoo personnel as well as from visitors of many nationalities. T o date all the labels in this series are the work of H. Ian White, D.A.(Edin.), who was employed by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland as its full-time artist for 12 years until his tragic death in May 1980 as the result of a road accident. It is to Ian Whiteâs great credit that, with the exception of the Reptile House and Aquarium, almost every animal enclosure in the Park carries one of his labels. The effectiveness of this particular system lies in its impact; it was designed as a complete contrast to the rather dull and lengthy texts which in the past accompanied the animal name plates. The aim of our labels is to offer the visitor selected information on the species in question, and to present it in a lively and varied manner, arousing further interest
