Shedd Aquarium, opened in 1971, was the first new major exhibit to be unveiled since the aquarium building was first opened in May 1930. The exhibit was considered to be the cornerstone of a much needed extensive renovation of the public display areas and of the antiquated water-handling systems. The total cost of the project was U S 1 . 2 million.
