T h e importance of certain members of this order as biological models and as reservoirs of disease (3)has been pointed out, but the potential value of these mammals has still not been fully recognized. A complete and thorough analysis of the behaviour, basic physiology and nutritional needs of edentates is a prerequisite for any study and yet available information is scarce. T h e Lesser anteater or tamandua Tamandua tetradactyla is found over a wide area of Central and South America (I). Although its range is broken and discontinuous, large numbers may still be found in some tropical forested regions (7). Food in the wild includes termites and their larva, selected insects and an occasional piece of ripe fruit.
