T H E NORTHERN ELEPHANT S E A L , Mirounga angustirostris Gill, I N T H E S A N D I E G O zoo by George H. Pournelle Curator of Mammals, San Diego Zoological Garden, USA F O R many years the San Diego Zoo has included the Northern elephant seal, Mirounga angustirostris, in its collection. The present range of this species includes offshore islands of Baja California and Southern California, north to about 37' north latitude. The major breeding colonies are centred on the beaches of Guadalupe Island, some 1 5 0 miles west of the north Baja California coast. Zoo specimens have ranged in age from beach-stranded pups only a few days old to ponderous adults captured from their island rookeries by special expeditions. New arrivals present several problems. If the seals are in good physical condition the chief problem is teachmg them to eat in captivity. In common with niost pinnipeds, newly-captured individuals of this species usually do not voluntarily accept food. However, a healthy adult or sub-adult may survive a fast period of several weeks without harm, providing water is available. Eventually, by patient attention and coaxing, an offering of fish
