The intertidal zone can be physically harsh and adaptation to this environment has created an assemblage of plants and animals which d o not merely tolerate such conditions but require them for survival. The experiences common to this community include exposure during low tides, temperature extremes, changes in salinity during periods of heavy rain and pounding surf. The first representations of the intertidal area in a museum setting were standard aquarium exhibits housing the types of plants and animals which it is possible to collect at low tide. Such displays have always been popular with visitors but. because they demand frequent collection of fresh specimens, they can usually be sustained only at institutions near the coast. Even there, they tend to be limited to the hardier species.
