Kesavapany and Hank Lim, ISEAS, Singapore 2009. First impressions can be a risky and potentially embarrassing proposition, not least for this reviewer. No fan of coffee table books, I was naturally apprehensive when confronted with my copy of this book, whose atypical design and glossy patina fostered the perception of triviality masquerading as scholarship. Such an impression, I am delighted to report, is wholly unwarranted. In place of the one-dimensional exercises in self-congratulation and affirmation with which coffee table books are typically associated is an excellent collection of balanced analyses that proffer hard yet fair assessments of APEC’s purposes, problems and prospects as the trade forum commemorated its twentieth year in 2009. APEC at 20 recaps the forum’s origins, takes stock of its present circumstances and discusses plausible avenues for the foreseeable future. The project brings together 12 (including the editors) eminence grises from the policy, corporate, media, academic and think-tank circles in the Asia-Pacific region.
