BOOK REVIEW: "Review of Misunderstood Myanmar — An Introspective Study of a Southeast Asian State... Koh Kim Seng’s book is published at a time when there is a major change in the public imagination and dominating narrative about what Myanmar and the Myanmar government are. Until about 1.5 years ago, mostly negative headlines about the presumed illegitimate military government dominated. Then, the release and political participation of Aung San Suu Kyi, combined with a series of policy changes, resulted in an astonishing shift in the ways Myanmar is portrayed and subsequently perceived. The title of the book “Misun- derstood Myanmar” refers to the former paradigm which has been used to view Myanmar. Koh means to engage with the old model and does that by center-staging the political ideologies of the ruling elite. He attempts to use these ideas of the elites to partially explain the actions of the government but also to refute existing notions about them.
